So what does a listing on the National Register for Historic Places do for me?
Having your historic property listed on the National Register for Historic Places, either individually or as a part of a larger district, is not intrinsically a positive or negative. However, a growing number of buyers of commercial and residential properties seek authentic older homes that are inventoried and publicly listed because it sends a clear signal that the building or site is “worthy of preservation.” Potential buyers often are willing to pay a premium for properties that are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. One reason being that it lends to the character and the “penache” of the property. Another reason is that Federal and State Historic Tax Credits are available ONLY to properties listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
