City of Xenia Fire Division outlines operational changes is response to COVID-19

As we continue to navigate through the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Xenia Fire Division has made some operational changes. In an effort to be transparent and to keep the citizens of  Xenia updated, we are sharing in detail what the division is doing to limit the spread of the virus.

  • When you call 9-1-1 to report a medical emergency, the dispatcher may ask you additional questions relating to the presence of a fever, cough, or respiratory distress. It is imperative for our crews’ safety that you let our dispatchers know if you have any of these symptoms.
  • If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, the dispatcher and/or EMS crew on scene may ask you to exit the structure to meet our crew outside. Reducing the amount of people exposed is vital to limiting the spread of the virus.
  • Certain emergencies will dispatch a medic unit and a fire engine, based upon information given to the dispatcher. You may see some of the crew "stage" in the front yard with additional equipment, awaiting for personnel assessing the patient to make the determination if the additional help is required in the building.
  • Our crew may be wearing various levels of personal protective equipment, which may include any combination of the following: gloves, eye protection, gowns, protective suits, or supplied air respirators.
  • If you are experiencing any symptoms consistent with a possible COVID-19 illness, crews may put a mask on you as well to limit the spread of the virus.
  • Family members will not be allowed to accompany a patient to the hospital in the medic unit. Exceptions may include one parent with a minor, or certain medical issues where a historian is needed.
  • Fire administration is closely monitoring this situation in conjunction with City Administration. We are constantly evaluating response models, apparatus staffing/deployment, as well as watching for the health and safety of our personnel.
  • Please practice social distancing, and wash your hands often.
  • The Fire Stations are closed to the public, but if you have any questions feel free to contact Fire Administration at (937) 376-7281.
