With the growing demand for paper products such as baby wipes, paper towels, and ‘flushable’ wipes amid the COVID-19 situation, the Xenia Public Service Department is reminding residents that only toilet paper should be flushed.
If paper products other than toilet paper are flushed into the sanitary sewer system, the lift station pumps can fail due to the products catching inside. When sewer pumps fail, the chance of potential sanitary sewer backup into homes and basements is increased. Sewer backups pose a serious risk to the health and safety of our neighborhoods.
Products labeled as ‘flushable’ still pose a threat to and can bind up the lift station pumps. By reducing the amount of non-flushable items that are in the City’s sanitary sewer system, the sanitary lift stations will operate more efficiently.
