Meet Sugar, a Diabetic Alert Dog for longtime City of Xenia employee

Sugar News

The City of Xenia’s employees have a new member of the family.

On Wednesday, February 5, ’Sugar’ the mini Aussie-Doodle was introduced to staff. Sugar is now a constant companion to Public Service employee Rodney Smith.

Rodney has Type 1 Diabetes and now Sugar is here to help him manage it. Sugar made the trip from Diabetic Alert Dogs of America in Las Vegas this week. The facility trains dogs for people of all ages who live with Diabetes. Sugar will alert Rodney by pawing at him if his sugar count is too high or too low, which can be potentially life-threatening. Rodney and Sugar are just now meeting, but the training she received has helped her warm up to him quickly. During the training process, Sugar was given articles of clothing with Rodney’s scent, to help with the transition process once she arrived here in Xenia.

Sugar will turn 1 year old on March 30th and even though she’s still a puppy, she’s a professional through-and-through. Rodney, who has been a City of Xenia employee for 24 years, will have Sugar with him at work and while he’s at home.
