The City of Xenia is getting ready to replace the playground at Shawnee Park!

During the City’s 2014 Play Xenia strategic planning process, Xenians identified their beautiful Shawnee Park as a top priority for continued City investment. Shawnee's existing playground is one of Xenia’s largest and serves children of all ages. However, the playground is lacking in ADA-compliant elements, has deteriorated significantly due to age, and is out of step with trends in recreational needs.

The City has set aside funds to replace the current equipment with a more modern, fun, and accessible playground. Construction is expected to occur in the fall of 2018 or the spring of 2019.

The City wants to make sure it designs a playground that is right for Shawnee Park and right for Xenia families. For that reason, City staff partnered with Xenia Community Schools to conduct a survey of school students and their parents in December 2017. Click here to view results of this survey.

Public Workshop on June 27 from 6:30-8:00 at the Xenia Community Library! Come help us design the new playground!

If you miss the meeting, view design concepts for the new playground below!

The City has developed is three options for new playground equipment at Shawnee Park. A fourth option, NaturePlay, is an add-on that can be added to any of the other three options if funding allows.

With all concepts, budget permitting, the City hopes to provide rubberized surfacing instead of mulch, new seating areas possibly focused around the existing tree sculptures, refurbished existing swingsets with new accessible (chair-shaped) swings, face-to-face swings, and potentially a basket swing; and interactive music features (playable chimes and marimba).
