Downtown Revitalization

Activities and Opportunities in Xenia's Downtown!

The City of Xenia is listening!  In the December 2009 Citizen Perception Survey conducted by WSU, 62.3% of Xenia residents polled responded that "Downtown Improvement and Revitalization" was an area in which they supported more City funding.  In the category of "Prioritizing the Needs of the City," Downtown Revitalization ranked first on a list of sixteen items.

Xenia City Council has been steadily working towards downtown revitalization.  The 2008 Downtown Strategic Plan contains a number of recommendations and priority items.  Despite the beginning of a difficult recession, the City of Xenia, with help from the Xenia Area Merchants, Xenia Area Chamber of Commerce, Xenia Economic Growth Corporation and other partners, have been laying the groundwork for revitalization.  Following the Downtown Strategic Plan, the City hired a Main Street Consultant who has assisted in the formation of a new partnership entity per the Heritage Ohio/Main Street model.  That entity is the Xenia Downtown Revitalization Committee.  (XDRC.)

One major recommendation of the Downtown Strategic Plan was that the City apply for a Comprehensive Downtown Revitalization Program Tier II Downtown Building and Streetscape Program.  The City applied in October 2009 and received funding for $400,000 in CDBG programming, as well as complimentary grant programming sought by the City.

As work proceeded in 2011, the City applied for and received a CDBG Discretionary Grant in the amount of $200,000 to complement work planned for the Toward Independence, Inc. complex at 81-87 E. Main.

Join us in making our downtown a welcome, thriving, attractive hub for Xenia, Ohio, and celebrate our vivid history, vibrant future!
